Ms Alicia Chin from Canada has been judged the 2005 winner of the Young International Freight Forwarder of the Year at this year’s FIATA World Congress in Moscow. The prize, sponsored by TT Club together with FIATA and IATA, is worth in excess of US$35,000 to the winner.

Ms Chin was selected from four regional finalists representing Africa/Middle East, Americas, Asia/Pacific and Europe. Her dissertation, entitled “The Nuts and Bolts of International Freight Forwarding”, was judged the winner in a remarkably close contest. Please click here if you would like to read the dissertation

Each of the four regional winner's papers was marked by six judges. Mr John Nicholls, chairman of the award steering group commented: “The results from the judges (marking independently and without knowledge of the other judges’ marks) were extremely close for all four of the regional winners. In fact there was not much more than 1% between them.”

The aim of the award is to encourage training and to enlarge the professional experience of candidates in the forwarding industry. It principally consists of a mixture of practical and academic training, including two weeks practical training based at one of the TT Club’s regional centres in London, Hong Kong or New Jersey, as well as week-long courses at an IATA training centre on transport law and insurance in London. The cost of travel and accommodation is borne by the sponsors in addition to the training costs.

This is the first year that the award has been run on a regional basis with the overall winner being selected from finalists from each of the FIATA regions. Organisers and sponsors plan to continue this successful innovation, which has made the contest more attractive and added to its international flavour.
