Cargo Fire & Loss Innovation Initiative: building evidence for safer cargo operations

Cargo fires and cargo loss are industry-wide problems that the industry has not yet solved. Every year, fires in cargo holds cause loss of life, vessel damage, and environmental harm at a scale the industry continues to underestimate.

The UK P&I Club and TT Club are anchor partners in the Cargo Fire & Loss Innovation Initiative (CFLII), a multi-year collaborative technology acceleration programme delivered by Safetytech Accelerator. Launched in 2023, CFLII is focused on reducing cargo fires and cargo loss in maritime operations by identifying promising technologies, testing them against real operational needs and supporting the development of practical guidance for the industry.
