The Challenge
Heavy Goods Vehicle drivers face a reality that few outside the industry fully appreciate. Long days covering hundreds of miles often end with nights spent sleeping in cabs, parked in laybys or remote locations, vulnerable to intrusion, theft and, in some cases, violent confrontation. While drivers are essential to keeping goods moving and economies functioning, their personal security and welfare remain persistently exposed.
Freight crime continues to rise, with incidents ranging from diesel theft and curtain slashing to organised attacks on moving trailers. Even in designated, well-lit parking areas, drivers report attempted break-ins and cargo theft. The situation places drivers under constant stress, undermines wellbeing and contributes to the growing challenge of attracting and retaining people in the profession.
The challenge is not simply preventing theft—it is protecting drivers, improving confidence when resting in vehicles, and delivering practical, affordable security that works in real-world conditions without disrupting daily operations.
The Innovation
DriverProtect is a low-cost, simple-to-install, AI-based human-detection security system designed specifically to protect HGV drivers and their vehicles. The system combines AI cameras with purpose-designed electronics that detect human presence and trigger deterrents only when genuine risk is identified.
At the core of the solution are AI human-detection cameras that output a positive voltage when human activity is detected. This signal is then used by TrafficAngel’s electronics to activate tailored responses, depending on the customer’s requirements.
In-cab protection addresses the most vulnerable scenario: a driver asleep in the cab. If sustained human activity is detected outside the vehicle, the system records the event and—after an adjustable delay to avoid false alarms—gently alerts the driver with a low-intensity buzzer. The driver can view live footage and, if necessary, activate powerful deterrents including floodlighting and external audio warnings. Management can also be notified automatically.
Remote alerting provides additional flexibility. Drivers away from their cab receive instant text notifications if suspicious activity is detected, allowing them to view live footage and trigger deterrents remotely. The same alerts can be generated for diesel theft, curtain slashing or unauthorised rear-door entry.
CargoProtect extends the same technology to theft in transit. For organised crime targeting moving trailers, the system can activate a non-tainting fog machine when unauthorised human entry is detected, rapidly filling the trailer and making continued criminal activity impossible. This represents a rare, low-risk deterrent for theft on the move.
Together, DriverProtect and CargoProtect address three critical freight-security challenges: driver welfare, theft from stationary vehicles, and organised theft during transit.
How It Was Implemented
Development began with a strong focus on collaboration. TrafficAngel engaged freight-security specialists, NAVCIS, and the Road Haulage Association (RHA) to understand real-world risks and operational constraints. Early concepts were tested on a 1:12 scale truck before being refined based on expert feedback.
The RHA played a key role in shaping the system’s behaviour, recommending the introduction of configurable time delays to prevent false alarms caused by passers-by. NAVCIS provided further exposure and validation by inviting TrafficAngel to present the system to more than 70 freight-security stakeholders.
Interest from operators experiencing theft from moving vehicles led directly to the development of CargoProtect. The system was subjected to practical testing, including live road trials where the fog-based deterrent was successfully activated at speeds of up to 56 mph—demonstrating effectiveness without introducing additional risk.
For commercial and security reasons, CargoProtect has been introduced quietly, with adoption driven primarily through trusted industry relationships and word of mouth.
Result
Since its launch, DriverProtect has gained strong industry backing. TruckStopUK has formally recognised the system’s potential and identified TrafficAngel as its first preferred technology partner in this space. Joint promotional initiatives are already planned.
The RHA remains actively supportive, with ongoing engagement including discussions with RHA Insurance to explore how DriverProtect and CargoProtect can contribute to reduced claims and improved risk profiles.
Early commercial traction includes confirmation of capital expenditure approval by a major operator for multiple CargoProtect fog-based systems, with deployment planned in early 2026.
TrafficAngel is now preparing for wider rollout of supply-only and supply-and-install programmes starting in 2026.
Conclusion
Freight crime is unlikely to disappear, but innovation can dramatically reduce its impact. DriverProtect and CargoProtect offer a practical, driver-focused response that prioritises personal safety, deters criminal activity and increases confidence for those working long hours in vulnerable conditions.
The solution is deliberately designed to be effective, user-friendly and robust—engineered to withstand the demanding realities of transport operations and supported by a knowledgeable after-sales team. By addressing driver welfare and cargo security together, TrafficAngel delivers a solution that protects people first, strengthens operations and supports the long-term resilience of the transport industry.
