The Challenge

The construction of Ørsted’s Hornsea offshore wind projects brought together hundreds of people working across terminals, fabrication yards, vessels and offshore sites. At Hull’s Alexandra Dock, teams operated in high-risk environments where heavy lifting, cargo movement and simultaneous operations were carried out at pace and often by multiple contractors with differing safety cultures. Traditional briefing-based training could not create the shared understanding or behavioural consistency needed to keep people safe.

Ørsted required a solution that would reach everyone—regardless of employer, job role or previous experience—and influence how they acted under pressure. They needed a way to build confidence to intervene, encourage people to recognise deteriorating conditions, and establish genuine accountability across a complex operational landscape. Crucially, they wanted a training approach strong enough to set a new benchmark for safety leadership across the wider Humber renewables and port sectors.

The Innovation

This challenge led to the creation of Thrive: a purpose built, immersive Safety Leadership Centre developed by Active Training Team (ATT). Thrive moves beyond traditional instruction by placing participants inside a realistic, unfolding operational scenario. Across a series of rooms, they experience the buildup to a serious incident and see how routine decisions, communication failures and production pressures combine to create risk.

Live actors, film and facilitated interaction bring the human and operational consequences into sharp focus. Instead of hearing what could go wrong, participants witness it, engage with it and understand their role in preventing it. The experience is then followed by practical training in communication and intervention, giving people tools they can apply immediately in ports, terminals, logistics yards and offshore environments.

How It Was Implemented

Ørsted invested £1.4 million in a dedicated Safety Leadership Centre at Immingham Docks, transforming a disused building into a fully immersive, multiroom environment. ATT developed the narrative, creative design, staging and technical infrastructure, working closely with Ørsted’s project and safety teams to ensure authenticity. A new local workforce of actors, facilitators and technicians was trained, allowing the programme to run daily and at scale throughout construction.

Result

More than 8,200 people have completed Thrive, including every worker on Hornsea 2, which was delivered with zero Lost Time Incidents. Participants consistently report increased confidence, stronger safety leadership behaviours and a greater willingness to challenge unsafe practice. Thrive has received national and international recognition for innovation and impact.

Conclusion

Thrive has become a lasting safety leadership resource for the renewables, ports and maritime sectors, adopted by major operators across the UK. Its principles now support safety training for rail, utilities, infrastructure and offshore wind in both the UK and USA. For the transport and logistics industry, Thrive offers a proven way to build behavioural consistency, strengthen communication and reduce incidents across complex, multi contractor operations.
