Access cards and RFID tags can be lost, shared or cloned, leaving terminals unable to verify who is actually entering the site. This exposes operations to accidents, misuse and organised criminalctivity. At the same time, manual gate processes and poor arrival coordination create congestion and unsafe truck queues, blocking critical infrastructure and increasing the risk of collisions.
A lack of real‑time visibility further compounds the problem. Drivers and operators are forced into last‑minute decisions under pressure, leading to unsafe behaviours. While international frameworks such as the ISPS Code require strict, verifiable access control, traditional systems struggle to deliver consistent compliance.
The challenge is clear: terminals must ensure that only the right driver, at the right time, and at the right place can access the facility—without creating congestion or relying on insecure physical credentials.
The Innovation
Passify is a hardware‑free, app‑based truck handling system that combines secure biometric identity verification with efficient gate and yard coordination.
Instead of cards or tokens, passify uses what every driver already carries—their smartphone. Biometric multi‑factor authentication ensures a non‑transferable, 100% verified driver identity, while GDPR‑compliant facial verification protects personal data. Digital slot booking reduces congestion by spreading arrivals evenly, eliminating unsafe queues at gates.
Within the terminal, QR‑based location validation guides drivers securely and precisely to the correct loading and unloading points. Every entry is fully traceable by person, time and location, providing terminals with certainty, accountability and compliance.
By removing physical access media and manual checks, passify makes gate processes safer, faster and fully auditable.
How It Was Implemented
Implementation followed a collaborative, step‑by‑step approach involving terminal operators, trucking companies and drivers as equal stakeholders.
The first large‑scale rollout took place at HHLA’s three terminals in Hamburg within the company’s first year. Initial pilots with selected trucking firms allowed the system to be tested under real operating conditions. On‑site support ensured smooth onboarding, building trust and early acceptance.
Following successful trials, passify was gradually made mandatory across all terminals. The system now operates continuously with 100% uptime, handling more than 1.7 million truck visits annually at these sites alone.
Integration is straightforward, requiring only a small number of interfaces with TOS/GOS systems and optional links to external TMS platforms. With no kiosks, cards or gate hardware required, deployment is rapid, cost‑efficient and disruption‑free.
Result
The impact has been both measurable and transformational. Passify is now live at six terminals, used by over 900 trucking companies and more than 20,000 drivers.
Verified biometric identity has eliminated impersonation and unauthorised access. Waiting times have been reduced by up to 40%, removing congestion‑related safety risks. Manual processing at inland terminals has dropped by up to 60%. Terminals consistently meet ISPS requirements, supported by ISO 27001‑certified IT security.
Operational resilience is proven, with zero downtime, response times under seven minutes and rapid issue resolution even at very high traffic volumes.
