The Challenge
Transporting and storing high‑risk batteries—including non‑certified prototypes, damaged or defective units, critically defective batteries, and end‑of‑life or waste batteries—presents a major safety challenge. These batteries are far less predictable than certified products due to unknown internal defects, mechanical deformation, contamination, or unstable chemistries. The consequences can include self‑heating, toxic off‑gassing, internal short circuits and rapid escalation into thermal runaway.
Once thermal runaway begins, it can propagate to neighbouring cells or modules, releasing extreme heat, dense smoke and hazardous gases such as hydrogen fluoride. This poses serious risks to people, infrastructure and the environment. Maritime transport further amplifies these dangers. Batteries are carried in confined, metal‑enclosed spaces with limited ventilation and restricted firefighting options. Long transit times, vibration, humidity and temperature fluctuations place additional stress on already unstable batteries, while misdeclared or incorrectly packaged shipments increase risk even further.
These conditions demand specialised packaging capable of containing thermal runaway, limiting oxygen access, filtering hazardous gases and preventing event propagation. At the same time, solutions must be demonstrably compliant, robustly tested and clearly documented to meet evolving regulatory requirements.
The Innovation
Lokistix addresses these challenges with LOKI‑Pack, a modular and configurable system for the compliant, safe and monitored transport and storage of batteries. The system is designed to meet all major transport regulations—including ADR, IMDG, RID and IATA—while remaining adaptable to specific risk profiles and use cases.
LOKI‑Pack uses flexible inlays made up of straps, cushions and flame‑retardant LOKI‑Bags, allowing secure packaging of battery cells, modules and packs of varying sizes. LOKI‑Bags fully wrap the battery using passive cooling materials, feature roll‑top closures, and are manufactured from highly temperature‑resistant, non‑conductive and non‑flammable fabrics. In combination with proven insulation technology, an over‑pressure relief valve and an integrated gas‑filter system, LOKI‑Pack provides effective containment of thermal events.
Digital functionality further extends safety and transparency. Integrated sensor modules enable LOKI‑Alert, which notifies operators when critical temperatures or characteristic gases are detected. LOKI‑ADC allows legally required shipping documents to be attached digitally to shipments, while LOKI‑Inspect provides condition monitoring of location, temperature and humidity along the supply chain.
LOKI‑Pack is designed as reusable packaging with an expected lifetime of seven to ten years, offering a sustainable alternative to disposable solutions.
How It Was Implemented
LOKI‑Pack has completed development and testing phases, with mass production scheduled to start in Q1 2026. The system is intended for logistics providers, recycling companies, R&D centres and organisations handling batteries throughout their lifecycle.
Lokistix’s digital services will launch as a beta in Q2 2026, with full functionality available in 2027. These services will enable real‑time monitoring, alerting, digital documentation and shipment management through a central platform.
LOKI‑Bags are already commercially available and used for safe storage and charging of batteries in offices, warehouses and homes, covering applications from industrial batteries to e‑bikes, e‑scooters and consumer electronics.
What Was the Result
The intended outcome of deploying LOKI‑Pack is a significant reduction in battery‑related incidents during transport and storage. The integrated digital tools provide transparency and traceability across the supply chain, supporting compliance with emerging requirements such as the EU Battery Passport.
LOKI‑Bags already demonstrably reduce the impact of thermal runaway by preventing flame propagation and protecting people and equipment in close proximity.
Conclusion
As battery production and energy density continue to increase, the severity and frequency of battery‑related incidents are also rising. Regulatory bodies worldwide are responding with stricter safety requirements across the battery lifecycle.
LOKISTIX provides a future‑ready solution aligned with these trends. By combining robust physical protection with digital monitoring, regulatory compliance and reusability, LOKI‑Pack supports a safer, more transparent and more efficient battery supply chain. Lokistix is committed to contributing to the safe growth of a critical industry at the heart of global decarbonisation.
