Lokistix – Smart, Safe Packaging for Lithium-Ion Battery Transport and Storage
The challenge
Lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) are classified as dangerous goods due to their risk of thermal runaway (TR)—a chain reaction that can lead to fire, toxic gas release, or explosion. These events, often triggered by manufacturing defects, heat, or mechanical damage, can escalate into thermal propagation (TP), affecting nearby cells. Past incidents have resulted in warehouse fires, vehicle destruction, and even loss of life. As demand for LiBs grows, so does the need for safer, smarter transport and storage solutions.
The innovation
Lokistix has developed a temperature-resistant, IoT-enabled packaging system that protects cylindrical, prismatic, and pouch cells of all sizes and chemistries. The solution includes:
- A sealed, modular box available in standard Euro pallet sizes (¼, ½, full), compatible with existing logistics infrastructure.
- A passive-preventive inlay that absorbs and dissipates heat to reduce the risk of TR.
- A pressure relief valve that safely vents gases to prevent TP.
- An embedded electronics module that monitors GPS, temperature, humidity, and acceleration.
- A cloud-based dashboard for real-time monitoring, analytics, and alerts—integrated with ERP, TMS, or SCV platforms.
How it works
The Lokistix box is reusable and designed for circulation between senders and receivers or for warehouse storage. If a thermal event is detected, alerts are sent instantly to drivers, pilots, or emergency responders via smartphone - enabling rapid response. The monitoring and analytics platform is offered as a license-based service, providing full visibility across the supply chain.
Case study
Currently in the development phase, Lokistix expects to launch a prototype by Q1 2025 and a minimum viable product by Q4 2025. Testing, certification, and integration with dangerous goods regulations are underway to ensure compliance and performance.
