Pondus VGM by Cindicium – Smarter, Safer Container Weight Verification

The challenge
Accurate container weight verification is critical to maritime safety, yet traditional methods are often slow, manual, and prone to human error. Mis-declared container weights can lead to serious consequences at sea, including vessel instability, overloading, and even capsising - putting crew, cargo, and vessels at risk. These issues also create operational disruptions, legal liabilities, and compliance challenges under the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations.
Despite the importance of Verified Gross Mass (VGM) compliance, many ports and terminals still rely on outdated or inefficient processes that fail to identify high-risk containers before they become a problem. There is a clear need for a faster, more accurate, and scalable solution.
The innovation
Cindicium’s Pondus VGM is a cutting-edge solution that automates container weight verification in under 60 seconds, without the need for physical weighing of every container. Seamlessly integrated with container handling equipment, Pondus collects weight data during normal container movements and transmits it wirelessly to a secure cloud platform.
There, advanced algorithms and machine learning models analyse the data to assess the likelihood of mis-declared weights. Each container is assigned a risk rating, allowing terminals to focus attention on high-risk containers while maintaining operational flow. This targeted approach ensures compliance, enhances safety, and reduces unnecessary delays.
How it works
Pondus was implemented in collaboration with Patrick Terminals in Australia. The system integrates directly with terminal operating systems and equipment such as straddle carriers, forklifts, automated stacking cranes (ASCs), and rubber-tyred gantries (RTGs). Once connected, the system calibrates based on the performance characteristics of each equipment type to ensure accurate readings.
As containers are handled, weight data is captured and compared to the declared VGM. A risk score from 0 (not mis declared) to 9 (very likely mis declared) is assigned. Containers flagged as high-risk are directed to the Pondus stand - an OIML-certified weighing station equipped with cameras for container identification. Here, a new VGM certificate is issued, ensuring full compliance and accuracy.
Case study
Since its deployment, Pondus has revealed that between 5% and 10% of all containers-both imports and exports-are mis declared by more than one tonne. This insight has enabled terminal operators to proactively address safety risks and prevent incidents before they occur.
By identifying and correcting mis declared weights, Pondus not only ensures regulatory compliance but also enhances the safety and efficiency of port operations. The system has already demonstrated measurable improvements in container handling accuracy and risk mitigation.
Potential impact
Pondus represents a transformative step forward in container logistics. By automating and streamlining the weight verification process, it reduces manual workload, minimises human error, and improves safety across the maritime supply chain. Ports and terminals benefit from faster throughput, fewer disruptions, and stronger compliance with international safety standards.
