Freight Crime in Benelux Supply Chains

The Benelux region comprising Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, is a vital centre for international trade and logistics, anchored by two of Europe’s busiest ports: Rotterdam and Antwerp‑Bruges. Its strategic location and dense transport infrastructure make the region economically significant, but also increasingly vulnerable to cargo crime, particularly along road transport routes.

In addition to mapping crime hotspots in Belgium and the Netherlands, the report examines legal and insurance challenges linked to cargo theft. It concludes by outlining practical mitigation strategies, including enhanced security measures, international cooperation, secure truck‑stop design, and the successful trial of smart cargo‑monitoring technologies. This report is also available in Dutch, please see below.
