Speaking at the TOC Container Supply Chain Conference in Rotterdam last week, freight insurance specialist TT Club's Kevin King called for all parties to take responsibility for minimising the risks inherent in container freight transportation.

Have you felt nervous driving next to a truck on a bend or roundabout? Your apprehension could well be justified. There are too many incidents where trucks, especially those carrying containers, overturn when cornering and discharge unwanted gifts on adjacent vehicles. Unfortunately fatalities often result. Never.never drive next to a truck on a roundabout!!!

International freight insurer TT Club convened a special seminar at the recent conference on transport and logistics, Trans Russia in Moscow. Lead by TT Club's General Manager, EMEA, Kevin King and Kirill Berezov from the insurer's long-established Russian network partner Panditrans, the seminar outlined both the changing nature of the transport operator's liability in Russia and the idiosyncratic nature of insurance conventions applicable in the region.

Weather seems to be a common theme around the globe at present. In tropical regions, the 'official' storm seasons have either just started (Eastern Pacific) or will do shortly (North Atlantic), although early activity was seen with the first named Atlantic storm, Ana, in early May. This comes on the back of series of powerful thunderstorms across the US and recent memory of significant winter storms across Europe. Simple advice: always be prepared!

Following from the early 'noughties' developments relating to security and the WCO SAFE Framework, the European Union responded with the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) certification process. This is now moving 'centre stage'; are you prepared or engaged?
Customs claims brought against freight forwarders have always been part of the tapestry of issues handled and covered by the TT Club. However, by way of alert, there has been a noticeable increase in claims involving the evasion of Anti-Dumping Duty ('ADD'). Most seem to result from investigations made by the European Anti-Fraud Office (known as 'OLAF', from its French name Office de Lutte Anti-Fraude).
The Union Customs Code (UCC) was adopted by the European Parliament and Council on 9 October 2013 as Regulation (EU) No 952/2013. Its provisions will start coming into effect on 1 May 2016. There will be a phased implementation period lasting until 31 December 2020, to allow the necessary time to develop the complex IT infrastructure to support EU wide simplifications.
