An estimated two million containers are sold annually by container shipping lines and leasing companies. They may be re-purposed for a wide range of applications or carry on their working life in the shipping industry.
Security should be a primary element of an operator's risk management policy. Preventing unauthorised access to vehicles and the vetting of personnel and counterparties are essential mitigation for the risks associated with the improper use and theft of goods vehicles.
Terrorism has become a sensitive topic and one that is increasingly demanding attention of the global supply chain. The threat is real and all stakeholders need to consider how to prepare.

Safety aspects of the way in which cargo is packed and transported in unit loads across the global supply chain continue to be the focus of opportunities for improvement. During a session of the Intermodal Europe Conference in Amsterdam today, four industry organisations representing different sectors of the supply chain have been drawing attention, in particular, to the responsibilities of container owners and operators in providing equipment that is fit for purpose and properly packed with cargo as set out in the CTU Code.

The risk of injury at the work place should be of highest concern to any entity, but injuries still account for almost a third of insurance claims costs for ports and terminals according to TT Club analyses. Over 90% of these incidents are caused by operational issues, with a further 7% related to maintenance failures and less than 1% caused by natural events.
While not often receiving much publicity, the need for ships in distress to find a safe refuge is all too common. Clearly this is an important area of responsibility in the maritime interface.
